Prehospital Care Courses
Castleford Training Solutions offer several courses that fall under the Prehospital Care banner, starting with FREC 3 (First Response Emergency Care) which is the entry course to the FREC system of courses. We also offer the FREC 3 (Requalification) if you choose to resit your FREC course after three years rather than proceeding on to a FREC 4. Another course that falls under the Prehospital group of courses is our Immediate Life Support (ILS) course, which is very popular with those needing an annual ILS certificate to keep their FREC 4 certificate valid.

The objective of the qualification is to benefit learners by providing them with the knowledge and confidence to provide the initial prehospital care at emergency or life-threatening incidents. Learners will gain the necessary skills associated with assessment, treatment and stabilisation of patients. The purpose of the QA Level 3 Award for First Response Emergency Care (RQF) qualification is to develop the learner’s knowledge and skills in order to provide prehospital care to a patient pending the arrival of a clinician.
Whilst achievement of this qualification confirms learners have met both the theoretical and practical requirements, this does not imply a ‘license to practice’ – the scope of practice for which will be determined by the organisation responsible for emergency first responders.
This qualification is regulated in the UK by Ofqual and awarded by Qualsafe Awards (QA).

The Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (FREC 4) is a nationally recognised qualification designed for individuals advancing their careers in prehospital emergency care. Building on the skills acquired in FREC 3, this course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to manage a broader range of medical emergencies, including major incidents, paediatric care, mental health crises, and trauma management. It aligns with descriptor level E of the Prehospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) skills framework and is accredited by Qualsafe Awards.
The course spans five days of classroom-based instruction, supported by self-directed study and practical assessments. We at CTS follow the Qualsafe recommended way to conduct the course with 2 days classroom followed by a couple of weeks off, then a further 2 days classroom, followed by the final classroom day a couple of weeks afterwards. We incorporate a structured series of tutorials aimed to help workbook completion well before the submission deadline.
Learners are evaluated through a combination of skills tests, workbooks, and invigilated exams. Upon successful completion, participants receive a Qualsafe Level 4 certificate, which can serve as a stepping stone toward higher qualifications like FREC 5. This makes FREC 4 a valuable credential for those seeking more autonomous roles in emergency medical services or specialist fields such as close protection and remote area response.

The Safe Administration of Lifesaving Medication (SALM) qualification is a Level 3 award designed for individuals working in prehospital care who are responsible for administering emergency medication. Accredited by Qualsafe Awards, this course is tailored for those employed by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered organisation—or an equivalent overseas body—and who have already completed the Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (FREC 4) or a recognised equivalent. The SALM course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely administer and monitor the effects of lifesaving medications such as adrenaline, naloxone, GTN spray, and glucose, among others.
Typically delivered over two days, the course combines practical assessments, multiple-choice exams, and a post-course workbook to evaluate learners’ competence. It also covers essential topics like medicine calculations, legal and professional responsibilities, and clinical case management. The Immediate Life Support qualification that Castleford Training Solutions offer is a bespoke course designed to facilitate the needs for maintaining a FREC 4 qualification. The course covers Basic Life Support content, airways management up to and including Supraglottic Airways, Triage (including various Triage Tools). Management of a Cardiac Arrest using all ILS skillset including Oxygen, AED and relevant airways is covered using full bodied manikins and a wide range of full size training AED’s.

This bespoke course starts by covering basic life support in the morning including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the primary survey, the recovery position and choking. The course moves on to Immediate Life Support including airways support using oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways moving on to supraglottic airways. Full management of a Cardiac arrest including the use of an AED and supplemental Oxygen is covered before moving on to the medical emergencies/life saving drugs part of the course. Each life threatening condition is covered in brief before covering the life saving drugs found in a dental practice, the storage of those drugs and the administration of them.

Course Spec CTS/1001/FEMP - Foundations of Event Medical Practice
Initial Medic Training (IMT)
Castleford Training Solutions (CTS) have developed our own Initial Medic Training course as a bespoke course to equip the learner with the skills to have the confidence to work both within a team or independently as an event medic. Each module of the course will receive either an Ofqual regulated certificate from the awarding body for that module (ie FREC 3 - Qualsafe, Level 3 Supervising First Aid for Mental Health - FAA/NUCO, Level 3 Safeguarding and Protecting Children, Young People or Vulnerable Adults - FAA/NUCO, Action Counters Terrorism - Highfields) or for What is Sepsis and Foundations of Event Medical Practice a Castleford Training Solutions Certificate. Further to this on completion a the learner will also receive a CTS certificate and a security embedded medic ID card.
There are no entry requirements for this course so it would suit both a learner with no prior medical/first aid experience or equally someone who has a previous first aid at work certificate. Upon completion of the course, CTS have close links with several companies who can offer regular event work as a medic. The minimum age to attend this course is 18 years old.
Course costs covers all learning materials, books and both an e-certificates and paper certificate and qualification card.
